2006 Hyundai Sonata Review
Hyundai's midsize sedan is redesigned for 2006 with new styling, more power, and standard curtain side airbags. Compared to the 1999-2005 model, the '06 is longer and taller by about 2 inches and has more passenger and cargo space. Sonata continues with 4- and 6-cyl engines. GL and GLS models have a 162-hp 4-cyl vs. 138 for Sonata's previous 4-cyl. The GLS V6 and LX models have a 235-hp V6 vs. 170 for the previous V6. The 4-cyl offers a choice of 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic. The V6 uses a 5-speed automatic. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and traction/antiskid control are standard. So are front side airbags and curtain side airbags. The LX includes heated leather seats and automatic climate control.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Midsize Cars represent the heart of the U.S. car market. Most are price-sensitive, conservatively designed, family oriented sedans and wagons.

Our Best Buys include Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Our Recommended picks include Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, and Subaru Outback and Legacy.

New or significantly redesigned models include Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Volkswagen Passat.
News
As usual with just-redesigned models, Sonata news will be sparse for a while. Even so, Hyundai says XM radio with a free three-month subscription will be added to standard equipment by early 2007. The company says it's considering an optional navigation system, but won't say if or when it would be available.

Only V6 Sonatas are built at Hyundai's new Alabama plant--the first-ever U.S. factory for a South Korean automaker. Four-cylinder models will still be imported for the time being. Hyundai says it will eventually move 4-cylinder production to the U.S., but will continue to source the engine from Korea. The new Sonata serves as the basis for an all-new 2007 Santa Fe SUV, also built at the Alabama plant.
