2004 Toyota Tacoma Review
Toyota's line of compact pickups loses a bed style for 2004. Tacoma offers 2-dr regular-cab and extended Xtracab models, plus crew-type Double Cabs with four conventional side doors and a 3-place rear bench seat. Xtracabs have two forward-facing rear jump seats. A V6 and two 4-cyl engines are offered with manual or optional automatic transmission. Tacoma comes with rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but has low-range gearing. Antilock brakes are standard on all Tacomas. Various trim/equipment packages are available, as are specialty 2WD PreRunner models with 4x4 styling cues. Gone for '04 is the optional flare-fender StepSide cargo box.
News
Redesigned Tacomas arrive this fall, but Toyota previewed one of them at the February 2004 Chicago Auto Show. Called X-Runner, it confirms that all Tacomas grow to near Dodge Durango size for '05, enhanced by burly new styling a la Toyota's big Tundra pickups. X-Runner aims at the youthful "sport truck" market and comes only in extended Access Cab form. It rides a unique X-member reinforced frame with a 5-inch longer wheelbase and 4-inch wider axles than previous Access Cab Tacomas, both significant gains. Wheelbase measures 127.4 inches, overall length 207, width near 72. A firmed-up suspension with standard 18-inch wheels lowers ride height by nearly 2 inches vs. other '05 models. X-Runner's new 240-hp 4.0-liter V6 should be standard or optional on other '05s. The same goes for its mandatory 6-speed manual transmission. No word yet on other powerteams, but don't be surprised if the base 4-cyl vanishes, leaving 2.7 and 3.4 V6s with detail updates. Other X-Runner features likely to be offered throughout the lineup include antilock brakes, curtain side airbags, and antiskid system. Crew Cab models are a sure bet, but maybe not regular cabs. We'd also expect 4WD improvements. Specifics for all '05 Tacomas will be breaking soon, so keep checking back with us.
