2004 Honda Accord Review
Satellite radio and expanded availability of curtain side airbags make 2004 news for Honda's popular midsize car. Accord offers sedans and coupes with 4-cyl or V6 power in LX and upscale EX trim, plus a price-leader 4-cyl DX sedan. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on 4-cyl models and a 5-speed automatic is optional. The automatic is standard on V6s except the sporty EX V6 coupe, which also offers a 6-speed manual. It also comes with 17-inch wheels vs. 16s or 15s on other Accords. ABS is standard on all models; V6s add traction control. Front side airbags are standard on V6s and the 4-cyl EX, and are available on LX models. Head-protecting curtain side airbags are standard on EX V6s and available on EX 4-cyl models. EXs offer a navigation system with voice control for navigation, audio, and climate functions. All Accords have a tilt/telescope steering wheel, and all but the base DX include remote keyless entry. Standard on EX V6s are dual-zone automatic climate control and heated seats; these are also available in the leather-upholstered 4-cyl versions, priced as EX-L models. V6s and 4-cyl EXs include an in-dash CD changer, and EX V6 and EX-L models have standard satellite radio.

News
Trumpeting "safety for everyone," Honda plans standard ABS, torso side airbags and curtain side airbags for all Accords and most other Honda/Acura models by 2007. In line with this, look also for antiskid/traction control to be added as standard or optional for all but basic Accords, perhaps starting with the '05 models.

Accord may get some minor cosmetic tweaks, or so one source believes. But the big news for '05 is a hybrid-power sedan, a first for this popular line and a year ahead of a rival gas-electric Toyota Camry. It's the first V6 hybrid from Honda and premieres the company's newly developed "variable cylinder management". Like GM's "displacement on demand," VCM is designed to shut down half the cylinders on light throttle to maximize fuel economy. No word on engine size or total power, but the hybrid Accord should continue Honda's Integrated Motor Assist arrangement, where the motor/battery pack is used mainly to boost the gasoline engine for full-throttle acceleration.
